An Easy Way to Test a Central Vacuum Inlet
Testing a central vacuum system is an important part of a home inspection, but carrying the vacuum hose from room to room can be inconvenient. Fortunately, there’s a simple trick that makes checking the wall inlets much easier.
Most central vacuum inlets are activated by completing a low-voltage electrical circuit. A small ball of aluminum foil can be used to briefly touch the two metal contacts inside the inlet, allowing the inspector to verify that the vacuum unit starts without needing to connect the hose.
This quick method helps confirm that each inlet communicates properly with the central vacuum system. While it doesn’t test suction or airflow, it is an efficient way to verify that the electrical activation circuit is functioning correctly during an inspection.
Always use caution when testing electrical components, and avoid inserting anything other than a small piece of aluminum foil across the low-voltage contacts. If a central vacuum system fails to activate or shows signs of malfunction, further evaluation and servicing by a qualified technician may be recommended.
