Dryer Vent Installation Mistakes to Watch For
A properly installed dryer vent is essential for both safety and the long-term health of your home. During a recent home inspection, we found an example of an incorrect dryer vent installation after a new roof had been installed.
The installer used a flexible metal duct for the dryer vent and combined it with the bathroom exhaust vent. While this may seem convenient, it creates several potential problems that should be corrected.
Dryer vent lines should be made from smooth, rigid metal ducting. Unlike flexible ducts, rigid metal allows lint to flow freely to the exterior, reducing the risk of lint buildup. Flexible ducts have interior ridges that can trap lint over time, increasing the risk of reduced airflow and even a dryer fire.
Another issue is that the dryer vent and bathroom exhaust should never share the same vent through the roof. Each system requires its own dedicated exhaust. Combining the two can cause the dryer to force warm, humid air back into the bathroom, leading to excess moisture, poor ventilation, and the potential for mold growth.
During a professional home inspection, these types of installation defects can be identified so they can be addressed before they become larger safety or maintenance concerns.
